We collect as little as we can

When you subscribe

• Your email address, so we can send you new issues.
• The page you signed up from and the time you signed up.
• When you click the confirmation link: the time, your IP address and your browser's name and version. Anti-spam law requires us to keep a record that you asked to receive the newsletter.
• To stop automated sign-ups: a one-way scrambled (hashed) copy of your IP address, deleted after 24 hours.

When you read full stories

When you subscribe, we also email the site owner your address and the page you signed up from, so we know someone new has joined.

When you subscribe, confirm your subscription or use a sign-in link, we set one cookie, pc_session, so this browser can show full stories. It holds a signed subscriber number and nothing else, and it lasts a year. The "Read the story" link in each issue email signs you in the same way.

Visitor counts on our public stats page

Each page you open sends us its address (for example /about/). Cloudflare, which hosts the site, tells us the country your connection comes from. We add these to daily totals and publish them on our stats page. To count each visitor once per day without cookies, we combine your IP address and browser details with a secret key that changes every day and scramble them into a one-way code. We never store your IP address, the code can't be traced back to you or linked to another day, and it is deleted the next day.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which stories get read. Its tag loads on every page and works in two modes:

• Until you click Accept (or if you click No thanks), it sets no cookies. Google receives only basic signals without cookies, such as that a page was viewed, along with your IP address and browser details, and uses them to estimate visits in aggregate.
• If you click Accept, it also sets cookies (named _ga) so repeat visits can be counted accurately.

We never use it for advertising: advertising storage and personalisation are always switched off. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings, also in the footer of every page.

What we don't do

• No ads and no advertising trackers.
• Our emails don't track whether you open them or which links you click.
• We never sell, rent or share your address with anyone for their own use.

Who helps us run the newsletter

• Cloudflare hosts this site, stores the subscriber list and sends confirmation emails. Like any web host, it keeps short-lived request logs.
• Amazon Web Services (Amazon Simple Email Service) delivers the issues to your inbox.
• Google runs Google Analytics, as described above.

They process data only on our instructions. Their servers may be outside your country.

How long we keep it

We keep your details while you're subscribed. When you unsubscribe, we keep only your email address and the date you left, so we never email you again by mistake. If you'd like that removed too, ask us.

Your choices

Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link. To see, correct or delete what we hold about you, email hello@adatastory.com and we'll reply within 30 days.
